The bollards which were installed as part of the works to turn John Street in Wexford town into a one-way system are to be removed by the end of March. A continual source of frustration for motorists, the bollards were originally erected to prevent drivers turning down one-way systems or parking at the side of the street.

However, at the January meeting of the Wexford Borough District, senior engineer Lar Lett confirmed that the bollards were due to be taken down in the coming weeks.

“We plan to take them out in due course, that will happen by the end of March,” he said in response to a query from Mayor Gary Laffan.

Meanwhile, Mr Lett has said he will liaise with gardaí regarding poor driver behaviour in and around the town. This issue was raised by Councillor Leonard Kelly who said a “hard-hitting” campaign was required to educate those using our roads.

“So many of the problems we see in the town are a result of driver behaviour, we have had campaigns before advising pedestrians to be seen and be safe but could we run a localised, hard-hitting campaign on driver behaviour?” asked Cllr Kelly. “The things I see walking and driving around the town would scare the life out of you.

"People say the roads are too tight or too wide or that we’re picking on young lads and people on scooters, but there’s so many instances of poor driver behaviour.”

“From an engineer’s perspective we can put in subtle traffic calming measures, but the focus should be on infrastructure for safer pedestrian crossings,” replied Mr Lett as he promised to contact gardaí regarding setting up a campaign.
