Affordable housing schemes in Co Wexford will make homeownership a reality for those squeezed out of market
Wexford PeopleWith many prospective homeowners squeezed out of the private market by ever-increasing house prices, Wexford County Council (WCC) has launched two new affordable housing schemes for those eager to own their first home.
An Lisín Mór in Coolballow will consist of 20 high-quality, A-rated homes and forms part of WCC’s wider strategy to support sustainable housing delivery. And Cul Caisleán in Taghmon will provide ten A-rated affordable homes located within walking distance of local amenities and just 15 minutes from Wexford town.
Where the affordable housing scheme differs is that it offers a reduced purchase price, with the local authority retaining an equity share in the property equivalent to the discount provided. This approach bridges the affordability gap for households who may otherwise struggle to buy a home, while allowing purchasers the option to redeem the local authority’s equity share over time.

Speaking at the launch of these two schemes, Housing Minster and Wexford TD, James Browne, said: “With almost €3.5m in funding from my own Department through the Affordable Housing Fund (AHF), these projects will help make homeownership a reality for local applicants, providing high-quality, energy-efficient homes and further strengthening opportunities for people to put down roots in their own communities.
“As highlighted by our Starter Homes Supports campaign, there are a range of schemes available to help get people moving into the home that’s right for them. The delivery of affordable homes remains a key priority for this Government and the drive and commitment shown by Wexford County Council is exactly what we need to hit the ambitious targets that we have set out in our Housing Action Plan, ‘Delivering Homes, Building Communities’.”
The Minister noted that the successful delivery of affordable housing in Co Wexford reflects the strong collaboration between Government and local authorities in addressing housing challenges and supporting sustainable community development.
Cathaoirleach of Wexford County Council, Councillor Lisa McDonald, said: “Affordable housing is about more than bricks and mortar. It is about providing stability, opportunity and a future for families across Co Wexford. We are proud to see these new schemes progressing and to support local people in achieving the dream of homeownership.”
Deputy Chief Executive of WCC, Eamonn Hore highlighted the council’s ongoing commitment to housing delivery.
“WCC remains firmly committed to increasing the supply of affordable housing and providing real opportunities for people to purchase a home,” he said. The launch of these new developments reflects the effectiveness of working in partnership with Government, developers and local communities.”
Given the nature of the affordable housing scheme and the number of possible grants available to buyers, Wexford County Council will host an information event in advance of the launch of Cul Caisleán, Taghmon.
An application webinar will be held on July 29 at 7 p.m., offering practical guidance on completing an application through the Council’s Affordable Housing Portal. To book a place contact rsvp@wexfordcoco.ie.
Looking ahead, a further opportunity for affordable homeownership will become available with the launch of Roxborough Manor, Mulgannon, Wexford town, in early September 2026.
