Additional supports for carers in Wexford as ‘invisble backbone’ of families recognised by government
Wexford PeopleThe “invisible backbone” of families across Co Wexford will receive an increased grant of €2,000 this month as the government seeks to provide “ongoing improvements to supports for carers”.
Paid automatically to people in receipt of Carer’s Allowance, Carer’s Benefit, or Domiciliary Care Allowance, the grant is also available to other full-time carers who are not receiving any of these payments.
5,779 people will receive the grant in Wexford while over 147,000 nationwide will benefit. Wexford TD and Housing Minister, James Browne, said the work of carers was “invaluable” in communities across the county.
“Our carers are often the invisible backbone of many families - they provide an invaluable service in their support for our older generations, people with disabilities and people with additional needs with dedication and dignity,” he said.
“This year’s grant will provide meaningful financial support to carers in Wexford and we know that’s essential.”
Minister for Social Protection, Dara Calleary, increased the grant to €2,000 as part of ongoing improvements to supports for carers. Over 18,000 carers are providing care for two or more people and will receive a grant for each person they are caring for.
Further improvements to the Carer’s Allowance, including changes to the weekly income disregard will come into effect in July.
These improvements will provide additional support and flexibility for carers who wish to remain connected to the workforce.
Concluding, James Browne T.D. said: “I want to acknowledge every carer for their contribution to across communities from New Ross to Enniscorthy and I want thank them for the difference they make every single day. I know how important their role is.”
