While much has been made of Wexford County Council’s efforts to promote active travel in its urban centres, there are fears that those living in the county’s rural areas are missing out on the new cycle lanes and footpaths which have begun populating the towns.

To that end, Fine Gael councillor Robbie Staples has submitted a motion calling upon the council to allocate funding to provide areas like his native Curracloe with active travel infrastructure.

His motion, which was subsequently passed in the chamber, reads: “In recognising the critical role that rural areas and villages play in the social, cultural, and economic life of County Wexford, and the need to ensure equitable access to safe, connected infrastructure for residents and visitors alike.

“Wexford County Council calls on the National Transport Authority (NTA) to commit to allocating a minimum of 20 per cent of all funding received from the National Transport Authority (NTA) for active travel and public realm works directly to rural areas and villages.”

Describing himself as a “proud advocate” for Wexford’s rural communities, Cllr Staples said those communities needed to be “recognised and valued” by their local council “not just in words, but through meaningful investment”.

"Upgrading footpaths, improving street lighting, and expanding cycle infrastructure are essential steps toward creating safer, more connected environments for residents and visitors alike,” he said. “These enhancements aren't luxuries—they're necessities that reflect the dignity and potential of rural life.”
