Young Tipperary people asked to ‘pull their socks up’ and get involved or risk losing local events

Young people in Tipperary need to get involved in their communities if they want to have events to go to in their area.
That’s according to Labour councillor Fiona Bonfield, who told the Nenagh Municipal District meeting that community events across Tipperary will be in trouble if people don’t step up.
Speaking about the successful St Patrick’s Day parade in her home village of Newport, Cllr Bonfield said that as committee members were getting older, if younger people didn’t step up, there would be no events in the future.
"A community is nothing without volunteers, and unfortunately, it’s very difficult in Newport as well, because some of our members are getting older,” Cllr Bonfield said.
"Unfortunately, the younger people don’t seem to want to come on board. For the younger people, they want things, but they have to realise that you have to put in a bit of effort as well, and it does pay dividends,” she added.
As an example, she pointed to the recent St Patrick’s Day parade in Newport, which was held on Saturday, March 14. The Labour councillor said that the streets were filled with colour and smiles on the day.
“You can see the children as well, getting their face painted, running around with Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, all the different aspects to it, it’s a great family day.
"But the people need to realise that you need volunteers in communities to come out and pull up their socks and do the work, because you know what, you will be rewarded in the end,” Cllr Bonfield added.
