Work on multi-million euro Tipperary garda station to get underway

Work on a state-of-the-art new garda station for Tipperary is finally due to get underway this month after several delays on the project.
Clonmel Garda Station is long overdue an upgrade, with the current facilities hailed as not fit for purpose by elected representatives.
As part of plans, a new garda station for Clonmel would be built at the multi-million euro Kickham Barracks Plaza project, being relocated from its current base on Emmet Street.
Tipperary TD Michael Murphy has confirmed that works on the new station are due to start by the end of this month.
Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan told the Tipperary Fine Gael TD that all the necessary steps have been taken for works on the long-awaited project to get underway.
A letter of intent has been issued to a preferred tenderer and the final business case has been completed and is with the Department for approval, Minister O’Callaghan outlined.
"I am very pleased that, after consistent engagement with the Minister and his Department, we now finally have a clear timeline for the delivery of this vital project,” Deputy Murphy said.
"Clonmel and the wider South Tipperary community deserve a modern, fit-for-purpose garda station that reflects the scale of policing needs in the region. The confirmation is a significant step forward. I will continue to work closely with the Minister and the Office of Public Works to ensure this project progresses without delay,” the Fine Gael TD added.
Concerns had been raised locally about delays to the project, with councillors in Clonmel questioning the reasons for delays on the project getting started. Works on the site had been due to start this summer.
Works on the new garda station are set to take 27 months to complete, with substantial completion due in November 2027.
