Uncertainty remains in Tipperary over long-awaited Limerick Junction to Clonmel walkway

By Katie O'Donovan, Independent.ie

The future of the proposed Limerick Junction to Clonmel walkway remains unclear, after questions were raised at this month’s meeting of Tipperary-Cahir-Cashel Municipal District.

At the February meeting of the Tipperary-Cahir-Cashel Municipal District, Fine Gael councillor Mary Hanna Hourigan sought an update on the Limerick Junction to Clonmel walkway.

Councillors received a presentation from Maria O’Donnell of the Munster Vales tourism initiative on efforts to boost tourism in the area.

Cllr Hourigan asked Ms O’Donnell if she had any information on the proposed walkway and what its current status was.

"I asked this question earlier at a workshop about a different walkway because one end is connected to it, but the Limerick Junction to Clonmel walkway, has that been completely shelved now?” Cllr Hourigan asked.

"I know there was a feasibility study carried out in 2021, and while we were talking about another walkway, I wanted to see if you had any update on that,” the Fine Gael councillor said.

In response, Ms O’Donnell said that she wasn’t fully sure on the status of the project as she isn’t directly involved with it, but will find out if there has been any updates and get back to Cllr Hourigan.

"On the Limerick Junction walkway, I’ll have to look into that, I think there’s consultations going on about it, but I’ll come back to you on that,” she said.

While no update was available on the Limerick Junction route, public consultation is currently underway on a separate greenway project in the district.

Public consultation is currently underway for another walkway project in the county, with Tipperary County Council hoping for submissions about the Cahir to Cashel Greenway project.

This project will see a walking and cycling path installed that would link Cahir Castle and the Rock of Cashel, and would aim to boost tourism between the two towns.

"The proposed Greenway has the potential to increase safety and accessibility to points of interest for locals, tourists and vulnerable groups,” Tipperary County Council said.

"The aim will be to enhance the visitor experience and contribute to the economic development of the local communities and the wider region,” they added.

The greenway also has the potential to link into the Clonmel to Carrick-on-Suir Blueway if a planned greenway between Clonmel and Cahir is done.

The deadline for submissions for this project is March 25, and submissions can be made online, in person at a council office, by email or by post.
