Traffic chaos expected as Tipperary roads to be closed for almost a month

By Katie O'Donovan, Independent.ie

A busy Tipperary town will see almost a month of road closures as Uisce Éireann continue to replace old pipes in the area.

The utility says they are making progress on upgrading pipes in the Carrick-on-Suir area, with 1.1km of pipes already replaced.

The works, which are being carried out under Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme, involve the replacement of 1.7km of aging water mains, which have been prone to bursts and high levels of leakage, with new modern pipes.

The utility started work this week on upgrading pipes on New Street, before moving onto Bridge Street on September 1.

Works will continue on Bridge Street until September 28, with a number of phased road closures take place to facilitate the safe and efficient delivery of the new pipes.

Bridge Street will be closed until September 28, West Gate will be closed from September 29 until October 3, while New Street will be closed from October 6 to October 17, a spokesperson from Uisce Éireann added.

Local access and emergency access will be facilitated throughout the programme.

Dave Murphy, Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann said that the upgrades will ensure a more reliable water supply in Carrick-on-Suir.

"We are committed to delivering a more secure and reliable water supply to communities across Ireland. These works in Carrick-on-Suir are part of that effort, ensuring fewer disruptions, improved water quality, and a network that’s fit for the future.

"We’re delighted with the progress made on this project and would like to thank the people of Carrick-on-Suir for their continued patience and support as these essential works continue,” Mr Murphy added.

Nationally, Uisce Éireann is investing a total of €250million into their Leakage Reduction Programme and is on target to reduce the national rate of leakage to 25 per cent by 2030, from a high point of 46 per cent in 2018.
