Tourism the focus of one Tipperary district with new chairperson elected

A new xathaoirleach has been elected to lead the Tipperary-Cahir-Cashel Municipal District for the coming year.

Fianna Fáil councillor Roger Kennedy was elected at the AGM of the Municipal District this week, having been proposed by party colleague Micheál Anglim, and seconded by Fine Gael’s Mary Hanna Hourigan.

Speaking to the Irish Independent after his election, Cllr Kennedy said that he will have a particular focus on tourism during his tenure as cathaoirleach of the district.

"The main priority I think should be pursued is tourism, because we have the jewels in the crown in our district, with the Rock of Cashel, the Glen of Aherlow, Cahir Castle, and we should put them to the fore,” Cllr Kennedy said.

“There’s new policies coming up in the tourism section and there’s a new focus on local tourism, and the way tourism is gone this year, it appears to be down worldwide because of the wars in different areas and we look forward to increasing our own native tourism with staycations,” Cllr Kennedy said.

“On the Rock of Cashel we expect that during the year, and we hope, that it will be named a World Heritage Site, and with that in mind, we want to get an interpretative centre, which the Office of Public Works (OPW) and the council and Fáilte Ireland have been looking for for a number of years and I want to help to get that for Cashel to get it up and running,” the Fianna Fáil councillor explained.

“There’s huge development going on in all the areas, with the Town Park in Cashel, with the development of Dan Breen House and the courthouse in Tipperary town in conjunction with the ETB and Moorhaven Centre, and in Cahir we have the massive development there in the town centre, and these are all projects that I want to help and assist everyone with," the district Cathaoirleach added.

Fine Gael councillor Marie Murphy was elected as Leas-Cathaoirleach of the district.
