Tipperary walk boosted by €1,000 donation from local councillor

A north Tipperary councillor has donated a substantial amount to a local walkway in the county.

Independent councillor Jim Ryan donated €1,000 to the Grange Walks in the Slieveardagh Hills on the Tipperary-Kilkenny border.

The donation was made out of Cllr Ryan’s personal discretion grant from Tipperary County Council, which the Grange Development Committee say will be used to improve facilities on the walk.

The money comes from a discretionary fund provided to councillors by Tipperary County Council.

Grange Walks are a group of short looped walks in the Slieveardagh Hills around the village of Grange, near Thurles.

The Grange Development Committee say that the donation will make a “valuable contribution”.

"Councillor Jim and his wife are regular visitors to Grange to experience the walks.

"The Grange Development Group Committee appreciate the donation, which will make a valuable contribution towards its forthcoming plans for repair of the render on the Wellington Tower (at the walks summit) and other works,” they added.

Cllr Ryan said that he was “delighted to have organised a financial contribution of €1,000 to the amazing Grange Walk.

"I want to compliment the hard working committee who do such a wonderful job in running and maintaining such a beautiful amenity,” he added.

Wellington Tower was built in 1817, in commemoration of the Duke of Wellington’s victory over Napoleon Bonaparte at the Battle of Waterloo two years previously.

The monument became completely hidden by forestry in latter years but it reappeared in the early 1990’s, following Coillte’s tree felling in the area.
