Tipperary students should be involved in naming of housing estates

The name of a new housing estate in Tipperary has been chosen by councillors at the July meeting of the Thurles Municipal District.
30 new homes are being built in the village of Borrisoleigh, with councillors in the district being asked to vote on the naming scheme for the new development.
The new development will be called Glean Caoi, in recognition of the first settlement in Borrisoleigh.
At the meeting, councillor Michael Smith called on the schools in the area to be called upon to help with naming new developments, as had been done in the past.
"We had schools involved, that hasn’t happened on this occasion, but going forward, I think it should be written down that the schools are involved in the naming, it’s much better, the interaction that we had in Roscrea and Templemore, it works and that’s what we should do in future,” Cllr Smith said.
In response to the calls, the district administrator said that the housing section have a policy for naming estates, and when schools are consulted, that goes outside the naming policy.
"The last time we went outside that policy for naming estates to go through the schools is something that housing agreed to, but it’s actually not part of the policy, so I think if that’s the way we want to do it, we probably should disclose to housing that we would like to have that policy,” the administrator said.
"I can put a note to housing to say that the introduction of the school being involved in it is important,” she added.
