Tipperary set for major water infrastructure overhaul to cut leaks

By Katie O'Donovan, Independent.ie

Uisce Éireann is set to begin work in the Shronell and Mount Bruis areas of Tipperary, replacing 5.3km of old water pipes to improve local water services and reduce leakage.

The water utility say there is a high level of leakage in the area, with the works coming as part of the National Leakage Reduction Programme.

The National Leakage Reduction Programme aims to conserve water supplies and ensure that water isn’t lost before it makes it to taps.

Works in Shronell and Mount Bruis will begin in late August, and will run until 2026.

Dave Murphy, programme manager with Uisce Éireann, said the works will significantly reduce burst water mains in the area.

"Replacing these old and damaged pipes will significantly lower the instances of bursts and outages on the network, eliminate existing leaks and reduce the amount of clean water lost into the ground. The works will also improve the operation of the network by reducing the need for frequent repairs to aged watermains.

"These improvements are crucial for supporting communities in Tipperary to thrive and will ensure a more resilient water supply for years to come. In advance of the works commencing, we would like to thank the local community for their support and patience as we carry out these essential works,” Mr Murphy added.
