Tipperary road ‘in deplorable’ condition will finally be resurfaced

A major Tipperary road which was described as being in a “deplorable” state and was “embarrassing to look at” is finally going to be resurfaced.
The N62 Slievenamon Road in Thurles was described by local councillor Jim Ryan as being in a “disgraceful” and “deplorable” state, and called on Tipperary County Council to do something about it.
"It’s full of potholes, the footpaths are in a disgraceful state, I know a number of people who have fallen and I know a number of people whose cars have been damaged,” he said.
"Unfortunately, there is going to be cases taken against the county council as a result of it,” Cllr Ryan added.
Now, the local councillor has confirmed that Tipperary County Council have agreed to resurface the road this week.
"I can confirm that Tipperary County Council will be carrying out resurfacing works on the Slievenamon Road in Thurles [on Tuesday] evening and night and ending Wednesday night,” Cllr Ryan said.
"A stop and go system will be in operation so expect delays. I am delighted that my representations on this issue have proven successful,” he added.
Speaking to the Irish Independent previously, Cllr Ryan said that despite the road being the responsibility of Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), they have delayed resurfacing works, and he was calling on the local authority to do a temporary resurfacing job on the road to ensure safety for pedestrians, motorists and other road users.
"We know that road is the responsibility of Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), but they have delayed the full resurfacing works on Slievenamon Road for another 12 months and that road, in the meantime, is only going to get worse,” Cllr Ryan said.
"I’m calling on Tipperary County Council to carry out a temporary road resurfacing job on it, because it’s just in a state that I have never seen it before, it’s embarrassing looking at it,” Cllr Ryan said.
The N62 Slievenamon Road is the main road linking Thurles and Templemore, and connects to Liberty Square in the heart of Thurles town.
A stop-go system will be in place while the works take place and road users are advised to expect delays throughout the duration of the resurfacing works.
