Tipperary residents frustrated by ‘unruly’ overnight works in major town

Night time roadworks in Clonmel have caused significant disruption to local residents in recent weeks.
At the September meeting of the Clonmel Borough District, councillor John Fitzgerald said that he had received a number of complaints from people living in the Thomas Street area of Clonmel.
"I’ve got a lot of complaints in respect of the works that have been carried out on Thomas Street, adjacent to the Sweetbriar estate, of late night work going on there and unruly work going on there in respect of what was happening, a lot of the residents there complained about it,” Cllr Fitzgerald said.
"The noise, first of all, I know for work to happen, there has to be noise, but there was particular what I would call unruly activity going on there late into the night,” he added.
In response, a council executive said that the project hadn’t initially planned on being carried out at night, but due to delays, it ended up having to be done during night time hours.
"We did have a conversation with the contractor there with regards to the noise that was generated during the night, and the disturbance it was causing to the residents, thankfully it’s finished now,” the council representative said.
"Going forward, we’re not going to give a license to use that compound that’s on Thomas Street if there’s going to be night time works, they were supposed to be finished those works by when the schools returned, but unfortunately there was delays,” councillors were told.
"They ended up doing night works then because the traffic was unmanageable to do the works during the day, so that’s why it had to be night works, but that compound is out of use now because of what’s happened for the last two weeks,” the council representative added.
The works on Thomas Street and Dillon Street were carried out to allow Uisce Éireann to install new watermains as part of an upgrade to the Monroe water treatment plant.
