Tipperary pub granted permission for major extension

By Katie O'Donovan, Independent.ie

At a time when many rural pubs are struggling to stay open, one Tipperary establishment has received a boost — planning permission for a major extension.

Pat Sheehy had applied to Tipperary County Council to build an extension to the Roundhill Bar in Ballinteenoe, outside Nenagh.

Under the plans, a new smoking area, extension to the dancefloor area, a new seating area, as well as an extension to the toilet area would be added.

The applicant also seeks to change the use of part of an existing dwelling on the site to a kitchen and restaurant, as well as including a new wastewater treatment plant to serve the pub.

Planning files state that the conversion of the dwelling house to kitchen and restaurant use would bring back into operation a property that is currently unused.

Tipperary County Council has now granted planning permission for the development, subject to nine planning conditions.

Among the conditions imposed by the council are that any construction and demolition is carried out in such a way to minimise dust and noise to neighbouring properties, that no construction or demolition work take place on Sundays or bank holidays, and that works only be carried out from 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday, and 8am to 2pm on Saturdays.

Tipperary County Council also stipulated that the developer must pay the local authority €924 for public services that the pub will use, and that any external lighting be pointed away from the road and from adjoining properties.

The popular bar is well known for music and social dancing events, with music on site most weekends.
