Tipperary hospital to get 24-bed extension as new primary care centre also coming

Healthcare in north Tipperary has gotten a boost with the confirmation that a new primary care centre is set to open within months, as well as the news that an extension will be built on the local hospital.
The HSE has confirmed that the new primary care centre in Nenagh is due to open in the new year, which will feature a host of healthcare services.
Located opposite Nenagh Hospital, the new primary care centre will include TUSLA offices, an HSE outpatient department with GP surgeries, dental and treatment rooms, and a range of offices and meeting spaces.
Services such as physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, social work, a dietician, ophthalmology, psychology service, home help, podiatry and dental and orthodontic services will all be housed at the new facility.
Nenagh Labour councillor Louise Morgan Walsh said that the new primary care centre will also add extra capacity to Nenagh Hospital.
"The primary care centre will also include additional outpatient capacity for UL Hospitals Group. These additional clinic facilities would essentially be an expansion of the facilities at Nenagh Hospital and would enable an increase of overall outpatient services from the level and type of services currently being provided locally.
"The facility is ideally located adjacent to existing healthcare facilities.
"The primary care centre would also include a chronic disease management team, including community-based specialist service in the areas of cardiology, respiratory and diabetes,” Cllr Morgan Walsh added.
North Tipperary TD Alan Kelly said that works on the primary care centre are well advanced and that recruitment is underway.
"I have been informed by the HSE that the new primary care centre and outpatient department in Tyone will be open in the new year. Final commissioning works are underway and staffing is being organised,” Deputy Kelly said.
"The facilities are ideally located adjacent to the existing healthcare facilities at Tyone such as Nenagh Hospital and the new Community Nursing Unit, and the new facility will compliment and work in an integrated fashion with these existing facilities,” he added.
Elsewhere in Nenagh, a design team has been appointed for a new 24-bed block at Nenagh Hospital.
Deputy Kelly said: “I have also been informed that a team has been appointed for the new 24-bed block that is to be located at Nenagh Hospital. Planning will be applied for in 2026.”
