Work on a long-awaited garda station in Tipperary is finally set to get underway in the coming weeks following months of delays.

The new state-of-the-art Clonmel Garda Station has been on the agenda for a number of years, but the project has been beset with a number of delays.

Now, work on the project is due to get underway in the next few weeks, with a local Tipperary company carrying out the construction work.

At the November meeting of the Clonmel Borough District, councillors welcomed news that the project was finally due to get underway.

Speaking at the meeting, Fine Gael councillor Tom Acheson said that it’s “great news that the garda station is at last going to be started”.

Works on the new garda station at the Kickham Barracks site were due to kick off in September, but delays meant that contractors couldn’t start.

An upgrade to Clonmel Garda Station has been long overdue, with the current facilities hailed as not fit for purpose by elected representatives.

As part of plans, a new garda station for Clonmel would be built at the multi-million euro Kickham Barracks Plaza project, being relocated from its current base on Emmet Street.

At the November meeting, Fianna Fáil councillor Siobhán Ambrose said that a local company will be carrying out the works on the garda station, which is even more positive news.

"In relation to the garda station, I just want to welcome the fact that it is local contractors, they are from Tipperary, Duggan Brothers, who have been awarded the contract and I think that’s very positive as well,” Cllr Ambrose said.

"We hope that works will commence in the coming weeks, with big projects there’s always a bit of a delay, so we welcome the fact that we will see works happening over the coming weeks,” she added.

Concerns had previously been raised locally about delays to the project, with councillors in Clonmel questioning the reasons for delays on the project getting started. Works on the site had originally been due to start this summer.

Works on the new garda station are set to take 27 months to complete, with substantial completion due in November 2027.
