Tipperary County Council to sell site for more than €500,000 after plans abandoned

Tipperary County Council is set to sell a site for more than €500,000 after it was deemed unsuitable for the purpose for which it was originally purchased.

At the council plenary meeting on Monday next (January 12), councillors will be asked to vote on the disposal of 21.75 hectares of land in Slievardagh, near the Tipperary/Kilkenny border.

Councillors will decide whether to sell the land to a Kilkenny man for €540,000.

The lands at Hardbog, Slievardagh, were bought by Tipperary County Council in 2015, with the intention of developing an engineered landfill site, according to documents seen by the Irish Independent.

However, the project was delayed by several years due to various legal challenges, and in that time, national policy and direction on using sites for landfill changed, meaning the site is now unsuitable for its intended purpose, Tipperary County Council said.

A decision was taken to dispose of the land as it is no longer required by the local authority, and no interest was expressed by other state agencies in developing it for alternative use.

The council said the land was advertised for sale in July 2025 through a local auctioneer, with a guide price of €400,000. Following a number of bids, the highest offer received was €540,000.

There will be a number of other land transfer agreements before councillors at January’s plenary meeting, with most being to correct mapping errors or to regularise land boundaries.

Councillors are set to vote on the land transfer at the full county council meeting next Monday.
