Tipperary County Council to sell land for development of solar farm

By Katie O'Donovan, Independent.ie

A parcel of land in Tipperary could soon be home to a new solar farm under plans between the council and SSE Airtricity.

Tipperary County Council are proposing to dispose of a 13.32 acre site at Toberaheena, ArdGaoithe, Clonmel to the utility company for the development of a solar farm.

The site in question is located at the eastern boundary of the Boston Scientific and Abbot Vascular plants, and was part of a 23.32 acre purchase from the HSE in 2023.

Tipperary County Council are now proposing to dispose of the 13.32 acre portion of the site to SSE Airtricity, subject to planning permission, to build and operate a solar farm on the site.

The plans also include a power purchase agreement, which means that the electricity generated by the solar farm would be sold to local industry, aiming to help the local authority to meet their target of having 70% of electricity produced form renewable sources by 2030.

The land would be transferred to SSE Airtricity for a price of €500,000, with a yearly rate of €30,750, with 3% compound interest, with the site to be leased to the company on a 25 year lease, subject to planning permission.

Councillors are due to vote on the land disposal at the full meeting of Tipperary County Council which takes place next week.
