Tipperary council receives no expressions of interest to develop affordable housing scheme

There were no expressions of interest received by Tipperary County Council to develop an affordable housing scheme in a major north Tipperary town.

A call for contractors to express their interest in building an affordable housing scheme in Nenagh was made in the last month in an attempt to alleviate the housing crisis in the north Tipperary town.

At the July meeting of the Nenagh Municipal District, Labour Party councillor Fiona Bonfield sought an update on hopes for an affordable housing scheme in the town, as well as questioning if there were any changes coming from the Government to increase income thresholds for social housing.

In response, the district’s housing spokesperson said that no contractors came forward to express their interest in developing an affordable housing scheme.

"We had an expression of interest open for the Nenagh area in the past month, but we had no expressions received.

"That’s probably down to the issues with wastewater, but for the scheme to work, we have to have developers that are interested in working with the scheme, but if there is any developers interested, we can open the expressions of interest again if we need to, but at the moment we have nobody interested,” the meeting heard.

The wastewater treatment plant in Nenagh is currently at full capacity and cannot sustain any further population growth in the town, however planning permission has been approved for an upgrade, with works hoped to get underway soon.

The district housing official also said that they had no update on the changing of income thresholds for social housing.

"We haven’t heard anything in relation to the changing of the thresholds or increasing at the moment, I haven’t heard any even rumblings about it, but I know it’s about two or two and a half years since they were increased,” a member of the district’s housing office told councillors.
