Tipperary bridge in ‘sorry looking state’ after repeated crashes

An historic Tipperary bridge is in a “sorry looking state” after several accidents over the years.
At the Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District meeting for November, Sinn Féin councillor David Dunne raised the issue of the condition of the Old Bridge in Carrick-on-Suir.
The Old Bridge has fallen into disrepair following repeated collisions.
"The bridge was hit and it’s starting to look ugly. There’s barriers down there ages, and it’s interfering with traffic too,” Cllr Dunne said.
In response, engineers agreed with Cllr Dunne, and said that the bridge was in a “sorry looking state”.
"The Old Bridge is in a sorry looking state at the moment, and the parapet at the corner, I believe it was hit twice,” the meeting heard.
"We’ve tried to follow up and find who the culprits are, but we haven’t been very successful to date on identifying who they were and pursuing costs to repair it that way,” councillors were told.
The engineering team said that they had done a structural survey on the bridge and would be ready when a funding stream was identified.
"In the meantime, we have undertaken a structural survey of the bridge, and we have the report, and we are ready for that, I have to secure funding for it by another means to get the work done,” a member of the council’s engineering staff told members.
"But it is unsightly, and it can’t be left the way it is, so it’s on my list to try and get funding and get works done,” he added.
