SSE Airtricity given land by Tipperary council to develop new solar farm

Tipperary County Council have approved the disposal of land for the development of a solar farm.

At the September meeting of the local authority, councillors were asked to vote on whether a 13.32 acre site at Toberaheena, ArdGaoithe, Clonmel should be signed over to SSE Airtricity for the development of a solar farm.

The site in question is located at the eastern boundary of the Boston Scientific and Abbot Vascular plants, and was part of a 23.32 acre purchase from the HSE in 2023.

The decision to dispose of the site was proposed by councillor Pat English, the mayor of Clonmel.

The land will now be transferred to SSE Airtricity for a price of €500,000, with a yearly rate of €30,750, with 3pc compound interest, with the site to be leased to the company on a 25-year lease, subject to planning permission.

The disposal plans also include a power purchase agreement, which means that the electricity generated by the solar farm would be sold to local industry, aiming to help the local authority to meet their target of having 70pc of electricity produced from renewable sources by 2030.
