‘Significant’ progress on Tipperary water upgrades but boil water notice remains

By Katie O'Donovan, Independent.ie

“Significant” progress has been made on the upgrades Tipperary water supplies, Uisce Éireann have said, with a view to lifting a long-standing boil water notice soon.

The utility has been working to upgrade the Monroe Water Treatment Plant in Clonmel, with 15km of old water mains set to be replaced with modern pipes.

Uisce Éireann say that significant progress has been made on the installation works with over 12km of the planned 15km of new pipeline now laid.

Elsewhere in Clonmel, customers supplied by the Glenary Water Treatment Plant have been under a boil water notice since last month.

Drinking water experts from Uisce Éireann are working to rectify the issues at the treatment plant and lift the notice as quickly as possible.

A €10million upgrade to the Glenary plant is progressing, with the upgrades coming as recurring boil water notices have been issued due to aging infrastructure and treatment capacity issues, which have affected hundreds of local customers

Both projects aim to deliver significant improvements to Clonmel’s drinking water supply, and ensure that homes and businesses in the town and the surrounding areas benefit from a safer, more reliable, and resilient supply.

Darragh Hannon, programme manager at Uisce Éireann, said that the projects are key in ensuring that the town’s water supply is set up for the future.

"These upgrades are vital steps towards ensuring that Clonmel’s water infrastructure is fit for the future—strengthening supply and providing the reliability that the town needs.

“We’d like to thank the community for their patience as we continue to carry out these essential works,” Mr Hannon added.

As works on the upgrade project continue, Uisce Éireann is advising people in the area that works will be ongoing this week.

The project has made steady progress on the Cashel Road and from Rathronan Cross to Giantsgrave Reservoir. Essential pipelaying has also been carried out on Cross Street.

Water main connections will take place overnight on College Avenue on Tuesday, November 4, from 7pm to 7am on Wednesday, November 5, but every effort is being made to minimise disruption to the community throughout the duration of these works, the utility has said.

The works at Monroe Water Treatment Plant include a full upgrade of the existing treatment facilities providing the capacity required to enable the rationalisation of the Poulavanogue Water Treatment Plant.

Enhancements will also be made to the Rathronan Pump Station, which will connect the Monroe supply to the Clonmel North Reservoir, providing additional resilience to the Poulavanogue network, Uisce Éireann has said.
