Plans advancing for new footbridge and riverside walkway in north Tipperary

A new riverside footbridge and walkway could soon transform public access in Newport, under plans being advanced by Tipperary County Council which are due to be submitted to An Coimisiún Pleanála.
Tipperary County Council is planning to install a pedestrian footbridge over the River Small in Newport, creating a new amenity space for residents and visitors to enjoy.
The proposed development consists of the construction of a new footbridge and the resurfacing of the existing lane with walkway link to the existing park in the form of new footpaths and all ancillary site works as required to complete the works at Newport Ball Alley and Park.
The project aims to create a link between Newport town and the river, and enhance the public realm by giving people a new recreation space to enjoy.
Representatives for the council say the project “aims to provide a safe, accessible, and environmentally sensitive route that encourages active travel.
"The scheme includes the design and off-site fabrication of a footbridge, carefully positioned to span from the south to the north bank on the River Small as well as the upgrading of the existing laneway while preserving its rural character,” agents for the council explained.
"The combined interventions are intended to improve mobility, promote outdoor recreation, and create a meaningful and lasting public realm enhancement for residents and visitors alike,” they added.
The River Small is a tributary of the Mulkear River, which forms part of the Lower Shannon River Special Area of Conservation.
The project also aims to increase the usage of the existing local amenity space in the village, as well as strengthening social connectivity for residents and visitors to the village.
Currently, there are two access points to the river banks, but no connection between the river amenity area on the south bank with the area on the north bank, which houses the Ball Alley.
As part of the project, an existing lane will also be resurfaced, making it easier for people to access the river and the amenity sites on either side of it.
The plans for the proposed new footbridge can be viewed at the Nenagh Municipal District Offices, or online on the Tipperary County Council website, and are now open to submissions or observations until December 12.
Anyone who wishes to make a submission or observation can do so in writing to An Coimisiún Pleanála, Tipperary County Council have said.
