Parking uncertainty at popular Tipperary theatre putting people off attending shows

The uncertainty around parking at a popular Tipperary arts centre is putting people off going to shows and fully availing of the facilities there.

That was the claim of independent councillor Jim Ryan at the June meeting of the Thurles Municipal District.

Cllr Ryan was highlighting issues around the access to the underground car park at The Source Arts Centre in Thurles, and said that uncertainty over whether the car park would be open was putting people off going to shows there.

Councillors at the meeting were given a briefing from Tipperary County Council’s culture, libraries and biodiversity section, who updated the local representatives about their latest report.

Speaking at the meeting, the independent councillor raised the issue with the culture section, seeking an update on its use.

"Just in relation to the underground car park at The Source Centre library, I think it’s open now unofficially for shows, I see a lot of cars parked in there, so I’m just wondering could you give an update regarding that underground car park?”

"Is it going to be open for shows?” Cllr Ryan asked.

"A lot of people have contacted me saying that they’re no longer going to attend shows in The Source Centre because of the fact that it’s shut and it’s inaccessible so I’m just wondering if we’re working together on that,” the independent councillor added.

In response, the representative from the council’s culture section said that he couldn’t give an exact answer as Tipperary County Council don’t have jurisdiction over The Source Arts Centre.

"On the car parking, and the underground car park for shows, I can’t answer that, because obviously I don’t have jurisdiction over the theatre, but I’ll find out and I’ll let you know more about that,” the council’s culture representative said.
