Nightly closures under way at notorious Tipperary accident blackspot

By Katie O'Donovan, Independent.ie

A high-risk stretch of the N24 in Tipperary, known for having twice the collision rate of other sections, will be temporarily closed for upgrade works

The N24, which links Limerick with Waterford will be closed at Knockagh, Cahir, starting nightly from Wednesday, September 3, between 8pm and 6am, with closures continuing until the morning of Saturday, September 6.

Traffic will be diverted via the R687, R639 and the N24, Tipperary County Council said.

This section of the road at Knockagh has been a frequent accident hotspot, with twice the average crash rate compared to the rest of the N24

Local councillor Andy Moloney said that the works on the road will make the road safer for all road users.

"The road has been done to a spec now that if we ever get funding for N24 Cahir to Waterford we won’t need to revisit this section, and the cycle lane should be standard with any further extensions to this road and any future projects,” Cllr Moloney said.

"The section at Knockagh was twice the average collision rate on the N24 so hopefully [it will be] a safer carriageway now. The cycle/walking path has received some comment but it’s a spec we should aim to achieve on all roads going forward,” the Cahir-based councillor added.
