A new installation in one of Tipperary’s major towns is using the power of play to foster friendships, personal development and a stronger community.

As part of National Play Day 2025, Tipperary County Council unveiled a new permanent outdoor chess table and seating in Clonmel, outside the entrance to Clonmel Library.

Funded through the Department of Children, Disability, Equality and Integration (DCDEI), the new chess table is a space designed to welcome children, young people and adults alike into the world of playful learning, strategic thinking, and social connection.

As part of National Play Day, Tipperary County Council was also able to deliver a series of events that brought children of all ages together through the power of play. From casual matches to playful instruction, the space quickly became a hub of intergenerational engagement, Tipperary County Council said.

Clonmel’s Junior Chess Club were among the first people to get to use the new chess table.

Clonmel Library said it was excited with the new addition, and that it will encourage people to sit down and take in the fresh air while playing a game.

"Clonmel Library are excited to announce the installation of a beautiful new static chess table and chairs outside the front entrance of the branch. This inviting space is perfect for casual games, friendly competitions or simply enjoying a quiet moment in the fresh air.”

People who wish to play chess at the new board can set up a membership with Clonmel Library, allowing them to borrow the pieces from the library for their game.
