New drive thru coffee shop approved for former Tipperary filling station

A new drive thru coffee shop has been approved for development at a former service station in Tipperary.
John Halpin applied to Tipperary County Council to convert a vacant part of a “long established” filling station at Barnora, Cahir for the sale of takeaway coffee, as well as a new hatch to allow it to function as a drive thru.
The new facility will be located at the former Halpin’s Service Station, with plans to reopen the filling station, shop, and motor factors, while adding a new drive thru coffee element.
"Halpin’s service station is a long established service station that is in existence since 1966 predating the current Local Area Plan and Zoning Matrix. The existing uses include petrol station, shop, key cutting and motor factors. These uses will continue along side the ancillary use of hot drink takeaway,” planning files say.
The building has been sitting vacant for some time, with the original owner having retired in the last decade.
The original owner “has been actively trying to sell or lease the premises and as such the existing uses have not been abandoned, but merely waiting for the next person to take it over,” agents for the applicant added.
Tipperary County Council granted permission for the development, subject to four conditions.
Among the conditions are that the development be carried out in accordance with the drawings that have been submitted to the council, that traffic management proposals be agreed with the local authority, and that surface water run-off from the building not be allowed to discharge onto the public road.
