Nearly €1million in funding for Tipperary outdoor projects

Almost €1million in funding has been allocated to projects across Tipperary that aim to enhance community wellbeing.
€934,303 has been allocated to four projects across the Premier County under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS).
The biggest allocation is to the Thurles River Suir Walkway Phase two project, which was granted €447,300 in funding for an extension of the River Suir Walkway from Lady’s Well into Thurles Town Park, establishing a looped walk of 5km.
The Clonmel to Carrick-on-Suir Blueway was given funding of €200,000 for widening and signage improvements along the route, while the Bay Lough Access Walkway at the Vee was allocated €153,000 for upgrades of the walkway.
The Monaincha Discovery Trail was allocated €134,003 for the enhancement of the existing track to Monaincha Abbey, including widening, fencing and signage.
Local councillor John O’Heney welcomed the funding announcement, saying that the projects will help to enhance community wellbeing.
"These projects are a real boost for our county. The Blueway and Bay Lough upgrades will strengthen Tipperary’s outdoor recreation network, providing safer, more accessible, and more enjoyable routes for everyone to experience the incredible natural beauty of our area.
"Investments like this encourage people to explore our landscapes, support local businesses, and enjoy healthier, more active lifestyles,” Cllr O’Heney said.
"I want to acknowledge the continued work of Tipperary County Council, local community groups, and all who have championed these initiatives. Their collaboration ensures that our region continues to grow as a destination for sustainable recreation and tourism,” he added.
Thurles councillor Jim Ryan highlighted the local group who came up with the idea for the Thurles River Walkway phase two project.
"I want to compliment Thurles Lions Club who initially came up with the idea of this project and were the driving force behind it along with Tipperary County council. Great news day for Thurles,” Cllr Ryan said.
Councillor Máirín McGrath said that the funding for the Bay Lough pathway resurfacing will make the walk more usable for all.
"Many people will be familiar with this popular amenity at the Vee, and know that the 1km walkway down to Bay Lough is in need for some maintenance to enhance this amenity even more,” she said.
"The job will include substantial drainage works and resurfacing/sealing of the existing path, making it more user friendly for all who come to enjoy the Vee, from near and far,” Cllr McGrath said.
The Tipperary allocations come as part of an overall national allocation of €16.5million, announced by Rural and Community Development Minister Dara Calleary.
