Months of road closures ahead in Tipperary as water mains works begin

By Katie O'Donovan, Independent.ie

Motorists across Tipperary are to face months of road closures as new water mains are laid around the county.

Tipperary County Council has given notice that they intend to close a number of roads around Clonmel for a number of months.

Cashel Street in the town will close from 7am on Friday, January 23, until 7am on Monday, March 16, from its junction with Queen Street and William Street.

For the duration of the works here, diversions will be in operation, the council have said.

Motorists will be diverted via Queen Street, Kickham Street, Upper Gladstone Street and then onto Morton Street, Tipperary County Council said.

Elsewhere in the town, the L-7614 at William Street in Clonmel, from its junction with Bolton Street and Upper Gladstone Street, will be closed from 7am on Monday, February 9, until Monday, March 9 at 7am.

While works are ongoing here, traffic will be diverted via Upper Gladstone Street, Morton Street, Mary Street, Bolton Street and onto Queen Street, Clonmel.

Both jobs in the major south Tipperary town are to facilitate the repair or replacement of water mains and all associated works, including the reinstatement of the road, footpaths and grass verges.

Elsewhere in the county, in Killenaule, near Cashel, the L-2210 road from Ballintogher to the Springhill road, from its junction with the Cashel Road will be closed for a number of months.

The road will be closed from 7pm on Monday, February 9 until 6am on Friday, May 1.

Diversions will be in place while the works to lay new water mains is ongoing, with motorists asked to take an alternative route.

Eastbound traffic on the R-691 can continue eastbound on the R691 bear right to head south and follow the R689 to Killenaule.

Westbound traffic on the R-691 should continue west before turning south onto the L-1403 at Moyglass, following local roads to access the Cashel Road.

Meanwhile, eastbound traffic for the Cashel Road can turn right at the Springhill road closure to follow Cashel Road to Killenaule.

Anyone who wishes to express objections to the proposed temporary road closures can do so, in writing to the Road Closures, Roads and Transportation section of Tipperary County Council, Civic Offices, Limerick Road, Nenagh, before 12pm on Thursday, 15 January 2026.
