By Katie O'Donovan, Independent.ie

Plans have been lodged with the local authority to upgrade Clonmel’s bus and train station, aiming to make it safer and more accessible for all users.

Bus Éireann has applied to Tipperary County Council for works at Clonmel Bus and Railway Station on Thomas Street, including the installation of a new bus shelter with seating to replace what’s currently there, as well as new paving, kerbs, timetable signage and road resurfacing to the front of the railway station building to accommodate a new accessible bus stop.

Revised car parking layouts, footpaths and an accessible set down area, a new pedestrian crossing within the site, new steps and ramp with balustrade within the site leading from the station to Thomas Street, a new pedestrian crossing at Thomas Street, new bicycle stands and new lighting also form part of the upgrade plans.

The proposed works will be funded by the National Transport Authority (NTA), and form part of a larger project which has seen work done on 22 bus stations around the country.

"The overall objective of the program is to improve access to the public transport network for people with disabilities and thus allow for improved options for participation in society by all people,” agents for Bus Éireann said.

"The works will provide a considerably improved centrally located public transport interchange, multi modal hub which affords seamless and safe interchange between modes of transport for the public,” agents added.

Tipperary County Council is scheduled to make a decision on the application by November 4.
