By Katie O'Donovan, Independent.ie

Almost €1million in funding is on the way to Tipperary after the latest round of allocations under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme.

Three Tipperary projects will share €912,950 in funding from the scheme, which aims to rejuvenate town centres, as well as driving economic growth in towns and villages across the country.

The single biggest allocation is €500,000 for the former Gaol in Nenagh, which will allow the vacant three-storey building to be redeveloped to provide a visitor experience stimulating economic and social regeneration of the Historic and Cultural Quarter in line with Nenagh’s Town Centre First Plan.

The second highest allocation in Tipperary is for the Town Park in Cashel, which was given €300,000 in funding from the scheme. This will go towards phase two development of the park, which aims to provide a high-quality park and public amenities in the centre of the town.

This will include further development of the boardwalk, construction of grass and gravel paths and landscaping to the west of the Bishops Walk.

Finally, €112,950 was awarded to Templemore for the enhancement of the biodiversity in its Town Park, and to improve the overall visitor experience.

This includes the development of the car park, resurfacing of pathways, planting of native hedgerows, and the introduction of a tranquil picnic area in Templemore Town Park.

The Tipperary projects are part of an overall nationwide €26million funding package, announced by Rural and Community Development Minister Dara Calleary.

Minister Calleary said that the funding allocations will help to make towns across Ireland better places to live.

"We will continue to roll-out significant levels of investment in rural Ireland – making our towns and villages better places to live, work, raise a family and run a business.

"This announcement confirms our strong commitment to supporting our rural communities both economically and socially,” he said.

The scheme is a popular one, he added, saying that applications put forward by local authorities across the country are of a consistently high standard.

"There is a high level of interest in the Town and Village Renewal scheme and the applications brought forward by our local authorities following their engagement with communities are of a consistently high standard. It is positive to note the increasing number of projects coming forward from towns that have been active in the Town Centre First process.

"These towns are working with their Town Regeneration Officers to develop and improve their communities,” Minister Calleary added.
