Long-running Tipperary healthcare saga edges closer to conclusion

A long-running Tipperary healthcare saga looks set to come to a close with confirmation that the HSE are due to fill a vacant position in the county.
There has been no ophthalmologist in south Tipperary since the retirement of Dr Maureen Hillary last year, which was forcing patients to travel to other counties in order to be seen, or face the costs of having to go private.
Now, independent councillor for Tipperary-Cahir-Cashel John O’Heney has confirmed that the HSE are in talks with a candidate to fill the position.
"The HSE have confirmed to me that following a successful recruitment campaign a candidate has been found to fill the position of ophthalmologist in south Tipperary,” Cllr O’Heney said.
"There are a number of final steps to go through but it is now very hopeful this position will be filled very soon,” he added.
"This is a campaign I have worked on relentlessly for the past year and I am delighted to see a positive outcome. This is a vital Service in our Community and I am happy to see it being filled,” Cllr O’Heney added.
Up until now, patients from Tipperary were being referred to Waterford to be see, or were having to pay to go private to ensure that they were seen.
