A new initiative aimed at addressing social isolation among older people in Tipperary has been launched by the local authority.

Tipperary County Council have launched the Tipperary Cultural Companions Clonmel group, aiming to bring older adults together through shared cultural experiences.

The group, part of the Age and Opportunity programme, helps tackle social isolation by connecting like-minded individuals who enjoy theatre, concerts, exhibitions, and more.

With over 20 active members already, the Clonmel group is thriving and welcoming new faces.

Eoin Kaar, Healthy Tipperary Co-ordinator said that the project is about friendship and connection.

“It’s about friendship, connection, and enjoying all that Tipperary’s cultural scene has to offer,” Mr Kaar said.

Mary, one of the founding members of the group, said that joining it had been like a breath of fresh air.

"Joining Cultural Companions has been a breath of fresh air. I’ve met wonderful people and enjoyed meet ups and events I wouldn’t have gone to on my own. It’s really opened up a whole new world for me,” she said.

Supported by Tipperary Age Friendly and Healthy Tipperary, the initiative is expected to expand across the county, bringing the joy of connection and culture to more communities.

The group is free to all, with events already showing a strong interest from older people in Tipperary.
