Green light for new electric vehicle charging hub in Tipperary

By Katie O'Donovan, Irish Independent

Plans for a new electric vehicle (EV) charging hub in Tipperary have been approved by councillors.

At the May meeting of the Clonmel Borough District, councillors were asked to decide on the Part 8 plans for a new EV charging hub at the Suirside Car Park.

The plans would see 10 regular parking spaces converted into six EV spaces, with three EV chargers to be installed - each catering for two cars.

Part 8 planning permission is used when it is the council themselves looking for permission to carry out a development.

At the most recent Clonmel Borough District meeting, councillors were told that the results of a recent public consultation on the proposed charging hub didn’t receive many responses.

“We only received one submission and that was from Uisce Éireann, and they have requested that we put a condition on this Part 8 that we don’t build over and impact any existing Uisce Éireann infrastructure,” the meeting heard.

The plans were formally approved at the meeting, being proposed by Fianna Fáil councillor Siobhán Ambrose, and seconded by Fine Gael’s John Fitzgerald.

The existing Suirside Car Park is situated on the Waterford side of Clonmel town, and the new charging ports will give drivers of EVs more choice on where they can park up and charge within the town.

Elsewhere in Clonmel, a dedicated campervan parking facility is boosting local business.

The Suir Island Aire site has space for 18 campervans, fresh water for refilling tanks, a designated waste disposal point for greywater and chemical toilets, and regularly emptied waste bins.
