Former Tipperary pub that had fallen into disrepair to be turned into homes

Planning permission has been granted to turn a former Tipperary pub, which has been lying idle for some time, into homes.

O’Donnell’s Pub on O’Connell Street in Clonmel had fallen into a state of disrepair over recent years, but plans that were put before the local authority would see the former pub changed to retail use, with residential accommodation provided on the upper floors.

Byrneleahy are the company behind the plans, which sought to change the use of the former public house to retail, demolish a single-storey extension to the rear of the property, and subdivide the existing residential accommodation on the upper floors into a one-bedroom apartment on the first floor and a two-bedroom duplex apartment on the second and third floors.

The proposed plans would also see a new three-storey building constructed, which would be accessed from Wolfe Tone Street, with a one-bedroom apartment on ground floor and a three-bedroom duplex apartment on upper floors.

Alterations to the existing building, including provision of new door and window opes and blocking up of existing opes and refurbishment of stairwell, alterations to front and rear elevations of existing building, including provision of new rainwater goods, and refurbishment of existing windows were also included in the planning application.

Tipperary County Council this week granted permission for the development, subject to 16 conditions.

Among the conditions imposed by local authority planners are that prior to any works starting, a historic building survey be carried out on the former pub, that any cables associated with the proposed development be run underground, and that the developer pay Tipperary County Council €2,600 for infrastructure and connections provided.
