‘Fantastic’ TG4 series showcasing south Tipperary is great promotional tool for the county

A TG4 documentary series on the River Suir has been praised for giving south Tipperary valuable promotion, a local councillor has said.

Cois Siúire, produced by Cormorant Films and aired on TG4 delved into the history and secrets of the River Suir, which runs through Tipperary.

Presented by Dr Colm Mac Gearailt, the four-part series explores the River Suir in unprecedented depth, placing the waterway and its communities centre stage.

At the April meeting of the Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District, Fianna Fáil councillor Kieran Bourke said that the programme was great promotion for the area.

"For the last four weeks I watched Cois Siúire on TG4 on a Wednesday night, and I thought it was absolutely fantastic,” he said.

"The promotion that this programme did for Tipperary – from the Devil’s Bit mountain, all the way down to county Wexford – it was absolutely fantastic. My own town Carrick-on-Suir was in it.

"I want to congratulate Kevin Power, he was fantastic with his singing and his speaking as Gaeilge, and Noel Bourke, the oldest men’s clothing shop in Ireland,” Cllr Bourke said.

“It was a wonderful piece of television,” the Fianna Fáil councillor added.

Agreeing, district Cathaoirleach and Sinn Féin councillor David Dunne said the series was an “enjoyable” watch.

"It was great, it was a really enjoyable watch, and fair play to you, Cllr Bourke for reminding everybody here of the show,” he said.

The series drew inspiration from the journey of writer Annraoi Ó Liatháin, whose travelogue Cois Siúire documented his passage along the river almost fifty years ago.

Ireland’s third-longest river flows 183 kilometres from its source at the Devil’s Bit in County Tipperary, passing through Loughmore, Templemore, Thurles, Cahir, Ardfinnan, Newcastle, Clonmel, Carrick-on-Suir and Waterford city on its way to the Celtic Sea.
