Conor McGregor requests Tipperary council backing for presidential race – ‘he’s delusional’

Former MMA fighter Conor McGregor has approached Tipperary County Council (TCC) seeking their nomination to get on the ballot sheet for the presidential election.
Mr McGregor officially approached the council on Wednesday, September 10, looking for their support in being added to the ballot paper.
The controversial candidate is now scheduled to address the members of the local authority at a special meeting on Tuesday next week, however, it has not been confirmed whether he will attend or not.
Reacting to the news, former Cathaoirleach of Tipperary County Council Declan Burgess said he would not be supporting Mr McGregor, calling him “delusional”.
In a post on social media, Cllr Burgess said: “he’s delusional. McGregor symbolises the worst of us.”
"The easiest and biggest no from me,” Cllr Burgess added.
The controversial sporting figure joins 23 other presidential hopefuls who have approached Tipperary County Council seeking their support, including businessman Peter Casey, who unsuccessfully contested the 2018 presidential election.
Other hopeful candidates who have approached TCC include Gerben Uunk from Limerick, who unsuccessfully stood for election as Limerick’s first ever directly elected mayor, as well as running for the local and general elections.
Professor Dolores Cahill, who made controversial remarks about the Covid-19 pandemic and mask wearing has also approached the council seeking their support, while Cork City councillor Kieran McCarthy has also made contact.
A special meeting of Tipperary County Council will take place next Tuesday in which county councillors will decide who will get the council’s official nomination.
