Chemist Warehouse set to open new outlet in north Tipperary

By Katie O'Donovan, Independent.ie

A north Tipperary town is set to get a new discount pharmacy outlet after a grant of planning permission cleared the way for them to open their doors.

The decision means that Chemist Warehouse will now be able to open their doors in Nenagh, selling large and bulk-type medical supplies, disability and convalescence aids, and sporting/rehabilitation equipment, according to planning files.

Melcorpo Commercial Property Unlimited had applied to Tipperary County Council for planning permission to change the use of unit seven of Nenagh Retail Park from a convenience retail foodstore to bulky good retail warehouse use with ancillary comparison sales space, dispensary and consult room.

Unit seven has remained vacant since discount food retailer Iceland pulled out of the Irish market in 2023, agents for Melcorpo said.

"Ensuring continued occupancy of unit seven through a new tenant has been increasingly challenging given the commercial realities facing the retail sector generally,” agents for the company said.

"Continued vacancy of unit seven is not just uneconomical, but undermines the vitality of the existing retail park and diminishes the retail offer to the town and its rural hinterland catchment,” they added.

The new pharmacy will join other tenants in Nenagh Retail Park, including Aldi, Woodies, Euro Car Parts, Expert Electrical, and Arramount Furniture, as well as a McDonald’s and a Costa Coffee outlet.

Tipperary County Council granted planning permission for the change of use, subject to 10 conditions.

Chemist Warehouse is an Australian company, with a number of locations across Ireland.
