Calls for action as three injured on ‘crumbling’ Tipperary road

By Katie O'Donovan, Independent.ie

A road in a very busy town in Tipperary is “crumbling away”, with people getting injured from falls while crossing the street.

That’s according to councillor Jim Ryan, who said that the road surface at the top of Liberty Square in Thurles, outside the Supermac’s outlet was in very poor condition, and asked engineers in the Thurles Municipal District if there were any plans to address it.

"The top end of Liberty Square, the road surface is crumbling away, particularly outside Supermac’s, a number of people have fallen when they come off the footpath crossing the road there,” Cllr Ryan said.

"There’s been three people that have been injured as a result of falling because of the condition of the road surface, so I’m just wondering is there any plans to do some sort of a temporary job on it, because I’ve never seen it as bad.

"I assume these people are going to be taking cases against the council as a result of their injuries, so I do think it’s important that we do some sort of temporary resurfacing on it,” the independent councillor added.

In response to Cllr Ryan, district engineer, Thomas Duffy said they would look into the issue and see what could be done to address it.

"We’ll take a look at the works that are needed on Liberty Square, outside Supermac’s, we’ve done the top of Westgate last week so we’ll see if we can do other minor works there,” he said.
