Busy Tipperary junction to be overhauled following failure to recruit lollipop person

Ongoing roadworks in a busy Tipperary town are aimed at protecting schoolchildren after the inability to recruit a lollipop person.

Locals in Cashel questioned the ongoing roadworks at the Green in the town, asking what works were taking place and why.

Independent councillor Liam Browne said that the roadworks were to narrow the road and widen the footpaths in order to make crossing safer for schoolchildren who use the road on a daily basis.

This, he said, was prompted by a decision to take away the role of lollipop person at the junction due to Tipperary County Council’s inability to recruit someone for the position, “despite many attempts not just in recent months, but going back over almost two years”.

"I've been contacted by a good few people at this stage asking what is happening with current roadworks at the Green in town, and why is the council narrowing the road/widening the footpaths at the junction,” Cllr Browne said.

The narrowing of the road and widening of the footpath will make crossing safer for children, by reducing the amount of time that pedestrians will spend on the road, as well as a narrower road helping to reduce traffic speed.

“The crossing will now become a full zebra crossing, with pedestrians given the right of way, and will be lit with warning lights over the summer months, to be completed before the schools return in September,” Cllr Browne added.
