Appeal for dangerous Tipperary junction to get improved safety measures after recent accidents

A north Tipperary councillor has called for urgent safety measures at a dangerous junction near Littleton, following a number of recent accidents.

At the September meeting of the Thurles Municipal District, councillor Jim Ryan highlighted the junction near Ballymoreen Cemetery, near Littleton, and the need for safety measures to be added, due to a number of accidents at that location in the past, including one just two weeks ago.

Speaking at the meeting, Cllr Ryan questioned whether works could be done under the Low Cost Safety Scheme.

"I’ve had a number of requests for safety measures at that junction, there was an accident there again two weeks ago, and there is a severe lack of signage or road markings and there’s no fluorescent bollards,” Cllr Ryan said.

“There’s no warning signs saying that you’re approaching a junction either, so I’m just wondering under the Low Cost Safety Scheme could we look at it,” Cllr Ryan asked.

"It’s a very busy junction and there’s a cemetery there, so I’m hoping it's something we can look at,” he added.

In response, the district engineer said that they will take a look at the junction and see what can be done to make it safer.

"We can take a look, I suppose the road levels and the sightlines there are good, so it might be a case of looking at signage there and more road markings, but we’ll take a look,” the district engineer said.

The council will now assess what measures, if any, can be introduced to improve safety at the busy junction.
