Anger as homes in Tipperary left without water for five days

By Katie O'Donovan, Independent.ie

Water supplies have returned to a major south Tipperary town after a burst water main left some areas without water for up to five days.

Following a major burst water main in Carrick-on-Suir, areas throughout the town were left without water over the bank holiday weekend.

According to Uisce Éireann, the burst impacted water supply to customers in the Greenhills housing estate and surrounding areas.

Crews were onsite over the weekend and Monday working to locate and repair the leak to ensure that supply was restored as quickly as possible.

Local Sinn Féin councillor David Dunne hit out at the delay in restoring water to the Greenhills area, and questioned why there was a lack of communication between the utility and residents.

"[Residents] are now going into their fifth day without water - why? Two leaks were identified but only one was fixed – again why?” Cllr Dunne asked in a post on social media.

The burst in the water main happened on Friday (August 1), with some residents of the Greenhills area still without water on Monday morning, before supplies finally returned by the evening time.

Water tankers were provided in the area during the outage, but these quickly ran out, the Sinn Féin councillor added.

Pierce Faherty, Uisce Éireann Water Operations Manager in Tipperary, said that the utility apologised for the inconvenienced caused by outage.

"Uisce Éireann acknowledges the inconvenience caused by the prolonged interruption to the water supply and sincerely thanks our customers for their patience and cooperation while this essential repair work was carried out.

"The repairs were particularly complex, which meant the works took longer to complete than initially anticipated,” Mr Faherty added.

Cllr Dunne welcomed the return of water supplies to the area, but hit out at the lack of communication from Uisce Éireann.

“It’s a shame it took nearly five days and the lack of information and sadly the disinformation from Irish Water left a lot to be desired,” he said.
