Sligo County Council to issue tenders for Eastern Garavogue Bridge and approach roads
The Sligo ChampionSligo County Council has revealed that the detailed design phase of the Eastern Garavogue Bridge and approach roads project is now substantially complete and that construction tender documents are expected to be issued to shortlisted contractors in the coming weeks, subject to Department of Transport approval.
The scheme will include approximately 1.8 kilometres of new road north of the Garavogue River, upgrades to 0.8 kilometres of existing road south of the river, 3.5 kilometres of new cycle tracks and footpaths, and improvements to a further 2.2 kilometres of existing walking and cycling infrastructure.
The final plan is a 70-metre single-span tied arch bridge with a slender, central steel arch rib rising nearly 35 metres above the river deck.
Cllr Marie Casserly described the update as a major milestone for one of Sligo’s most important transport infrastructure projects.
“This is very positive news for Sligo. The Eastern Garavogue Bridge has been a long-awaited project that will improve traffic movement, strengthen connectivity across the town and provide high-quality walking and cycling infrastructure. It is encouraging to see the project moving steadily towards the construction stage.”
Cllr Casserly also welcomed the completion of utility diversion designs, additional site security works and the forthcoming launch of a dedicated project website, which will provide regular updates on construction progress, traffic management arrangements, project visualisations, drone footage and frequently asked questions.
“Providing regular updates to the public will be important as the project progresses. The new website will be a valuable resource for residents, businesses and commuters, ensuring everyone has access to the latest information.”
She acknowledged the continued work of Sligo County Council, Transport Infrastructure Ireland and the Department of Transport in advancing the project.
“I look forward to the remaining approvals being secured and construction commencing. This investment will deliver long-term benefits for Sligo, improving access, reducing congestion and supporting the continued growth and development of our county.”
Cllr Casserly added that she will continue to support the project as it progresses through the final pre-construction stages and into delivery.
