Figures provided to the June meeting of Sligo County Council have revealed 244 vacant properties have been brought back into use through the vacant property refurbishment grant scheme over the past two and a half years.

Welcoming the report which asked how many premises vacant properties were purchased by the Local Authority using compulsory purchase powers, Cllr Bree said, “I am pleased to note that 244 vacant properties have been brought back into use since 2024 through the vacant property refurbishment grant scheme.

“Given the current housing crisis we need all these properties back in use.”

“I am also pleased that notices of intention to compulsory acquire derelict properties in Adelaide and Barrack Streets have been issued. I know my colleague Cllr O’Boyle has been lobbying for some time to have the properties in Barrack Street taken in charge by the Council.”

Cllr Bree also asked for an update in relation to the Kazelain property, which was compulsory acquired last year, with Director of Services Emer Concannon replying, “We are looking at putting it back into housing use.”
