Clarity has been sought in relation to the number of 60kmh signs and how many road signs with the five diagonal lines have been installed in Sligo since the default speed limit on local roads was introduced.

A motion brought before Monday’s monthly meeting of Sligo County Council by Cllr Donal Gilroy who said there remains confusion among the public and gardaí in relation to which roads the new speed limits are applicable to.

Cllr Gilroy said, “I imagine if I passed a picture of the sign with the five lines that 18 Councillors would fail their test.”

Cllr Arthur Gibbons said there was confusion for drivers coming from Britain or Northern Ireland in relation to the change between miles per hour and kilometres per hour.

In reply, Cllr Gilroy said, “It’s the first thing that will change in a united Ireland.”
