Sligo Councillors call on TII to remedy dangerous road where crashes are a weekly occurrence
The Sligo ChampionAt the December meeting of Sligo County Council Cllr Dara Mulvey highlighted the need for improvement works to be carried out at Lugawarry along the N59 asking, “Is it going to take a fatality before work is carried out?”
Cllr Mulvey insisted the onus is on Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) to address the issue rather than the local authority saying, “This is the main artery from the west coast into Sligo but TII seem to have forgotten about it. There have been a minimum of 10 accidents this year alone. Is it going to take a fatality before work is carried out? The fault does not lie with Sligo County Council, this is solely TII.”
Cllr Mulvey said he first outlined his concerns in relation to the road in 2014 saying, “12 years and nothing has happened. TII seriously need to look at Sligo and the north west. This needs to be sorted out, people driving on it are living in fear.”
Echoing the sentiments expressed by Cllr Mulvey, Cllr Michael Clarke said, “Just last week a lorry went off the road,” adding, “We have no dispute with the roads department,” of Sligo County Council.
Cllr Clarke added, “This is a shovel ready project that can be progressed tomorrow if the government is interested in infrastructure in the north west, it will save lives.”
Cllr Thomas Walsh noted, “I welcome the reply that Phase 2 has been submitted and the Council is seeking approval to move to design.
Cllr Thomas Healy echoed the sentiments previously expressed when he said, “People have died on this road, the more pressure we put on the minister the better.”
