Sligo Drumcliffe Cllr, Thomas Walsh has called on the Department of Transport to intervene in relation to what he has described as “An extremely dangerous stretch of regional road at Dunamurray in Ballygawley."

Cllr Walsh said the dangerous corner along the R290 is not safe and needs to be urgently addressed.

“We have seen an allocation of €40,000 in 2025 for some realignment work at this corner but the project will need further monies. A further application for funding has been made to the Department for bridge rehabilitation works.”

Stressing the seriousness and need for urgency Cllr Walsh said, “The time to act is now. This is an area where there have been two fatalities and numerous accidents in recent months again, not to mention the regular near misses. There has been a lot of discussion over the last number of months with our roads team in Sligo County Council who are committed to this project. I want to thank the landowner who has been supportive of this project.

“More people are dying on our roads and road safety is of critical importance. The Department have a role to play in supporting Local Authorities with accessing the required funding. We need to see an increase in allocation for low cost safety work in 2026”.
