News that a contractor has been appointed following a procurement process to carry out road improvement works on the R290 at Doonamurray on the Ballintogher to Ballygawley road has been welcomed by Cllr Thomas Walsh.

A long time campaigner for works to be carried out on the dangerous section of road, Cllr Walsh noted it is hoped works will commence in September.

Earlier this year, Sligo County Coroner Fergal Kelly requested Sligo County Council undertake a review of the location, which was the scene of fatal road traffic accident in 2024.

Mr Kelly had been speaking at the inquest into the death of Muriel Conboy, a care assistant who was on her way home from work when her car collided with a low stone wall before crashing into an oncoming car.

Cllr Walsh noted the location at Doonamurray is the scene of two fatalities, numerous accidents and regular near misses.

Funding of €40,000 was allocated last year for realignment work, while an additional €30,000 was allocated this year for bridge safety works.
