The HSE has confirmed that Sligo Airport has been identified as the preferred location for the new North West Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS).

Welcoming the development, Councillor Edel McSharry said, “I am absolutely delighted to see confirmation from the HSE that Sligo Airport has been selected as the preferred site for the North West Air Ambulance service. This is a significant and positive development for the entire region and will greatly enhance emergency response capabilities across the North West.”

The HSE is currently finalising the last phase of its decision-making process for the establishment of the North West Air Ambulance, which will provide rapid response and advanced medical care at the scene of emergencies, particularly in rural and hard-to-reach areas.

Councillor McSharry highlighted the importance of sustained advocacy in securing this outcome.

“I have been actively lobbying for this service through my work on the West North West Regional Health Forum, alongside colleagues who recognised the urgent need for equitable access to emergency care in our region. I was also pleased to support a motion brought forward by Councillor Barry Gallagher at Sligo County Council, which I seconded, calling on the Minister to ensure Sligo Airport was selected as the most suitable and central location.”

The decision reflects the strategic advantages of Sligo Airport, including its existing infrastructure, operational control tower, and experienced on-site team. This new additional service will complement the existing Irish Coast Guard search and rescue operations already based there.

“Sligo Airport offers the infrastructure, expertise and central positioning needed to deliver this life-saving service effectively. Its location ensures rapid response times across Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon, Mayo and into Donegal, helping to ensure patients receive timely treatment and transfer to the most appropriate specialist hospitals.”

The introduction of the HEMS service in the North West will bring the region in line with similar services already operating in Athlone and Cork, helping to ensure greater equality of access to emergency healthcare nationwide.

Councillor McSharry also acknowledged the contribution of those involved in supporting and developing Sligo Airport.

“This is also very positive news for Sligo Airport and a recognition of its growing importance in delivering critical services. I want to commend all the hardworking staff at the airport, the Airport Manager Noel Jennings, Chair of the Board, Albert Higgins and other board members, for their continued commitment and vision.”

Concluding, Councillor McSharry noted that further details are awaited saying, “I look forward to further clarity from the HSE regarding the scope and level of service to be delivered. This is a major step forward for healthcare provision in the North West, and I will continue to engage to ensure its successful implementation.”
